Cabbages and turnips: reuniting old friends!

As part of the EU's Prima BrasExplor project, numerous farm-grown varieties and wild populations of turnips and cabbages have been collected over a wide climatic gradient. Their continued cultivation depends on their use, which is why we have produced a freely accessible e-book of recipes from four countries (Algeria, France, Italy and Slovenia) in 5 languages.

Adapting to climate change is a major challenge. Farmers have long been selecting local varieties adapted to their environmental conditions. These varieties do not always correspond to current agronomic performances, or have taste qualities that differ from what is expected on standard markets. Many are now disappearing; some are still available from biological resource centers (CRB BrACySol in France or KIS in Slovenia) or from a few gardeners who still grow and propagate them..

For cabbages and turnips, they exist from northern France to southern Algeria, and are therefore adapted to very different climates. We collected them across this broad climatic gradient as part of an EU Prima BrasExplor project. Partners from four countries (Algeria, France, Italy and Slovenia) have collected the recipes associated with them.

Eight to ten recipes are proposed per country. After each partner has translated the recipes into English, we have written them in our own languages (Arabic, French, Italian and Slovenian). The freely distributable e-book begins with the choice of language. From the cover page, you can see either the authors, the introduction or the table of contents, from which you just have to choose a recipe. The document has been deposited in data-gouv.
